Some roofs ask more of you than others. This one sits right beside a church tower in Cambridge, on a period property with lichened stone chimneys and parapet walls all round. The whole roof came off and went back on in new slate, and the old character stayed put.

Parapet roofs collect water behind the walls, so the box gutters do the real work. We lined them with high performance felt, re-rendered the parapet walls above, and dressed lead around the chimneys and abutments. The slates are fixed over new battens with a dry ridge system, which holds everything mechanically instead of relying on mortar. Less maintenance for the owner, and no loose ridge tiles after a windy night.

Working next to a landmark

Access was tight and the building deserved care, so materials came in by crane and the scaffold was planned around the churchyard. We kept the original stone chimneys exactly as they were, weathered lichen and all. New slate underneath, history on top.
